New Estimates of the Solar-Neighborhood Massive Star Birthrate and the Galactic Supernova Rate
The birthrate of stars of masses >=10 Msolar is estimatedfrom a sample of just over 400 O3-B2 dwarfs within 1.5 kpc of the Sunand the result extrapolated to estimate the Galactic supernova ratecontributed by such stars. The solar-neighborhood Galactic-plane massivestar birthrate is estimated at ~176 stars kpc-3Myr-1. On the basis of a model in which the Galactic stellardensity distribution comprises a ``disk+central hole'' like that of thedust infrared emission (as proposed by Drimmel and Spergel), theGalactic supernova rate is estimated at probably not less than ~1 normore than ~2 per century and the number of O3-B2 dwarfs within the solarcircle at ~200,000.

The Indo-US Library of Coudé Feed Stellar Spectra
We have obtained spectra for 1273 stars using the 0.9 m coudéfeed telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. This telescope feedsthe coudé spectrograph of the 2.1 m telescope. The spectra havebeen obtained with the no. 5 camera of the coudé spectrograph anda Loral 3K×1K CCD. Two gratings have been used to provide spectralcoverage from 3460 to 9464 Å, at a resolution of ~1 Å FWHMand at an original dispersion of 0.44 Å pixel-1. For885 stars we have complete spectra over the entire 3460 to 9464 Åwavelength region (neglecting small gaps of less than 50 Å), andpartial spectral coverage for the remaining stars. The 1273 stars havebeen selected to provide broad coverage of the atmospheric parametersTeff, logg, and [Fe/H], as well as spectral type. The goal ofthe project is to provide a comprehensive library of stellar spectra foruse in the automated classification of stellar and galaxy spectra and ingalaxy population synthesis. In this paper we discuss thecharacteristics of the spectral library, viz., details of theobservations, data reduction procedures, and selection of stars. We alsopresent a few illustrations of the quality and information available inthe spectra. The first version of the complete spectral library is nowpublicly available from the National Optical Astronomy Observatory(NOAO) via ftp and http.

Catalog of Galactic OB Stars
An all-sky catalog of Galactic OB stars has been created by extendingthe Case-Hamburg Galactic plane luminous-stars surveys to include 5500additional objects drawn from the literature. This work brings the totalnumber of known or reasonably suspected OB stars to over 16,000.Companion databases of UBVβ photometry and MK classifications forthese objects include nearly 30,000 and 20,000 entries, respectively.

A database of high and medium-resolution stellar spectra
We present a database of 908 spectra of 709 stars obtained with theELODIE spectrograph at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence. 52 orders ofthe echelle spectra have been carefully fitted together to providecontinuous, high-resolution spectra in the wavelength range lambdalambda = 410-680 nm. The archive provides a large coverage of the spaceof atmospheric parameters: T_eff from 3700 K to 13 600 K, log g from0.03 to 5.86 and [Fe/H] from -2.8 to +0.7. At the nominal resolution,R=42 000, the mean signal-to-noise ratio is 150 per pixel. The spectragiven at this resolution are normalized to their pseudo-continuum andare intended to serve for abundance studies, spectral classification andtests of stellar atmosphere models. A lower resolution version of thearchive, at R=10 000, is calibrated in physical flux with a broad-bandphotometric precision of 2.5% and narrow-band precision of 0.5%. It iswell suited to stellar population synthesis of galaxies and clusters,and to kinematical investigations of stellar systems. The archive isdistributed in FITS format through the HYPERCAT and CDS databases. Basedon observations made on the 193 cm telescope at the Haute-ProvenceObservatory, France. UBV beta Database for Case-Hamburg Northern and Southern Luminous Stars
A database of photoelectric UBV beta photometry for stars listed in theCase-Hamburg northern and southern Milky Way luminous stars surveys hasbeen compiled from the original research literature. Consisting of over16,000 observations of some 7300 stars from over 500 sources, thisdatabase constitutes the most complete compilation of such photometryavailable for intrinsically luminous stars around the Galactic plane.Over 5000 stars listed in the Case-Hamburg surveys still lackfundamental photometric data.

The calibration of the Stromgren photometric system for A, F and early G supergiants. I - The observational data
An empirical calibration of the Stromgren uvby-beta photometric systemfor the A, F, and early G supergiants is being derived. This paperexplains the observational program and the photometric reductiontechniques used and presents a catalog of new Stromgren photometry forover 600 A, F, and G supergiants.

Infrared speckle observations of the binary Ross 614 AB - Combined shift-and-add and zero-and-add analysis
One-dimensional infrared speckle scans of Ross 614 AB were recorded at awavelength of 2.2 microns, and the three bins corresponding to the threebest seeing conditions were further processed by applying ashift-and-add algorithm to the set of images contained within each bin,generating three shift-and-add images with differing shift-and-addpoint-spread functions. A zero-and-add technique was used to deconvolvethe three shift-and-add images in order to obtain parameterscorresponding to the separation and the brightness ratio of atwo-component model of Ross 614 Ab. Least-squares analysis resultsreveal a separation of 1.04 arcsec and a brightness ratio of 4.3 for thebinary system at this wavelength.

Image selection and binning for improved atmospheric calibration of infrared speckle data
Using one-dimensional scans of unresolved sources, observed at awavelength of 2.2 ?m, the authors have investigated threeimage-sharpness criteria and have compared them to instantaneousestimates of the Fried parameter r0 as determined by fittingthe low-frequency domain of the power spectra. One of these criteria isstrongly correlated with these seeing measurements, allowing toexpediently sort the specklegrams according to image quality. Inaddition, the authors have investigated the "spectral ratio", aseeing-dependent, object-independent parameter used by von der Lühe(1984). They confirm its seeing dependence and also show that it can beused to calibrate visibilities when a resolved object and an unresolvedcalibrator are observed under different seeing conditions. Finally, theauthors show that computing visibilities from seeing-matched binsrequires ?0.25 cm bin widths in r0.

Hyades and Sirius supercluster members brighter than magnitude (V) 7.1. II - Right ascension six to twelve hours
The present star sample is contained in the Bright Star Catalogue andits Supplement, augmented with a further supplement of 788 stars foundduring various observing programs over the past 40 years. Accurate,four-color and H-beta, or (RI), photometry is available for most of thesupercluster members. The criteria for membership are the comparisons ofthe proper motion, radial velocity, and luminosity obtained from thesupercluster parameters with the observed motions and the luminosityderived from the photometric parameters. New proper motions, based onall available catalogs, have been derived for the additional 788 starsdiscussed here, as well as all supercluster members.

A photometric determination of the metal content for F-G type supergiants in the Large Magellanic Cloud
A VBLUW photometric analysis is used to derive the metal content of some100 F- and G type supergiants in the LMC. Using the empirical locus ofPel in the V-B/B-L diagram in conjunction with the relative dependenceof theoretical colors on the metal abundance, a metal deficiency of1.4-1.6 is found for the LMC stars in comparison with those in the solarneighborhood. With an average UBV system foreground reddening of E(B-V)= 0.05 for the LMC, these stars have a metal content of 0.66 + 0.11,-0.03 of the solar abundance. Agreement is found with the result ofprevious studies. Application to the derivation of the reddenings ofmost of the galactic supergiants is noted.

Ultraviolet and optical studies of binaries with luminous cool primaries and hot companions. II - BVRI observations
Johnson system BVRI measurements are presented for 117 stars, most ofthem with no previous R and I photometry and many with no previous B andV. The prime objects for measurement are unresolved or nearly unresolvedbinaries containing a late-type giant or supergiant and an early-typecompanion. Other objects on the program include suspected binaries andother F-G giants and supergiants lacking at least R and I magnitudes.The variable F and G supergiants 1 Mon, 89 Her, HR 7308, HR 8157, HR8752, and rho-Cas and the eclipsing systems W Ser and ST Aqr wereobserved; HR 8752 showed significant dimming and cooling over 125 days.Several of Halliwell's (1979) candidates for nearby stars were measured.
