DSS on WikiSky
From WikiSky
- Initial snapshots taken on film plates by Oschin Schmidt Telescope at Palomar Observatory (http://www.astro.caltech.edu/observatories/palomar/index.html) and UK Schmidt Telescope at Anglo-Australian Observatory (http://www.aao.gov.au/ukst/). Each plate is 35x35cm, and covers 6.5°x6.5° of the sky. The survey was taken in IR, Red and Blue bands, about 2000 plates per band.
- Film plates scanned at Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI, http://www-gsss.stsci.edu/SkySurveys/SkySurveys.htm) in FITS images 14,000 x 14,000 or 23,040 x 23,040 pixels in size, or approximately 0.4 and 1.1 gigabytes each.
- Then FITS images have been compressed using H-transform (http://www.stsci.edu/software/hcompress.html) to reduce the data volume.
- WikiSky used Red and Blue bands to reconstruct color images (4000 plates, 6.5°x6.5° each).
