A catalogue of eclipsing variables
A new catalogue of 6330 eclipsing variable stars is presented. Thecatalogue was developed from the General Catalogue of Variable Stars(GCVS) and its textual remarks by including recently publishedinformation about classification of 843 systems and making correspondingcorrections of GCVS data. The catalogue1 represents thelargest list of eclipsing binaries classified from observations.

Key parameters of W UMa-type contact binaries discovered by HIPPARCOS
A sample of W UMa-type binaries which were discovered by the HIPPARCOSsatellite was constructed with the aid of well defined selectioncriteria described in this work. The selection process showed up thatseveral systems of which the variability types have been assigned as EBin HIPPARCOS catalogue are genuine contact binaries of W UMa-type. Thelight curves of the 64 selected systems based on HIPPARCOS photometrywere analyzed with the aid of light curve synthesis method by Rucinskiand their geometric elements (namely mass ratio q, degree of contact f,and orbital inclination i) were determined. The solutions were obtainedfor the first time for many of the systems in the sample and would be agood source for their future light curve analyses based on more precisefollow-up observations.Based on observations made with the ESA HIPPARCOSastrometry satellite.

The 74th Special Name-list of Variable Stars
We present the Name-list introducing GCVS names for 3153 variable starsdiscovered by the Hipparcos mission.

Young, high-velocity stars. I - Rotational velocities and a catalog of early-type stars at the South Galactic Pole
A catalog has been compiled of 305 early-type stars to F0 and 15thmagnitude in 218 sq deg at the South Galactic Pole. Stromgren photometryand medium- and high-resolution spectra for many of the catalog starshave been obtained. Radial velocities, H-beta line widths, Balmer jumps, and Ca II K line equivalent widths have been measured and tabulated.Rotational velocities were obtained for eight distant A stars and arefound to be typical of values for normal young main sequence stars.

A kinematic and abundance survey at the galactic poles
The DDO intermediate band system is used to obtain detailed informationabout abundance gradients and velocity dispersions in the galaxy, withan emphasis on the properties of halo stars in the range of from 1 to 5kpc. The DDO abundance index is calibrated agianst (Fe/H) for metal-poorstars, with a resulting gradient of about -0.2 per kpc. However, whenthe sample is divided into two subsamples with (Fe/H) less than -0.5 andequal to or greater than -0.5, the gradients are -0.14 and 0.00,respectively. DDO observations of about 1000 stars, mostly G5-K5 giants, show that the velocity dispersion increases both with decrease inmetallicity and increase in z distance. The abundances found for high-zstars are similar to the A-star results of Rodgers (1971) in that abouthalf the K giants above 1 kpc appear to have solar abundances.

A Finding List of Stars of Spectral Type A7 and Earlier in Regions at High Galactic Latitudes. II. South Galactic Pole
An objective prism survey of stars of spectral type A7 and earlier hasbeen made of stars in a 230 square degree region at the South GalacticPole as part of an investigation of galactic structure perpendicular tothe galactic plane. The survev reported here was made with the 4°prism on the Tonantzintla Schmidt telescope and the UV prism on theMichigan Curtis Schmidt telescope at Cerro Tololo. A finding listcontaining positions and spectral types for 180 stars is presented, withfinding charts for the stars too faint to be included in the CD or BDcatalogues.
