Medium-resolution Isaac Newton Telescope library of empirical spectra - II. The stellar atmospheric parameters
We present a homogeneous set of stellar atmospheric parameters(Teff, logg, [Fe/H]) for MILES, a new spectral stellarlibrary covering the range λλ 3525-7500Å at2.3Å (FWHM) spectral resolution. The library consists of 985 starsspanning a large range in atmospheric parameters, from super-metal-rich,cool stars to hot, metal-poor stars. The spectral resolution, spectraltype coverage and number of stars represent a substantial improvementover previous libraries used in population synthesis models. Theatmospheric parameters that we present here are the result of aprevious, extensive compilation from the literature. In order toconstruct a homogeneous data set of atmospheric parameters we have takenthe sample of stars of Soubiran, Katz & Cayrel, which has very welldetermined fundamental parameters, as the standard reference system forour field stars, and have calibrated and bootstrapped the data fromother papers against it. The atmospheric parameters for our clusterstars have also been revised and updated according to recent metallicityscales, colour-temperature relations and improved set of isochrones.

A new stellar library developed for stellar population synthesismodelling is presented. The library consists of 985 stars spanning alarge range in atmospheric parameters. The spectra were obtained at the2.5-m Isaac Newton Telescope and cover the range λλ3525-7500 Å at 2.3 Å (full width at half-maximum) spectralresolution. The spectral resolution, spectral-type coverage,flux-calibration accuracy and number of stars represent a substantialimprovement over previous libraries used in population-synthesis models.

The Pul-3 catalogue of 58483 stars in the Tycho-2 system
A catalogue of positions and proper motions of 58483 stars (Pul-3) hasbeen constructed at the Pulkovo observatory. The Pul-3 is based on theresults of measurements of photographic plates with galaxies (Deutsch'splan). All plates were taken using the Pulkovo Normal Astrograph (thefirst epoch is in the 1950s and the second epoch is in the 1970s).The Pul-3 catalogue contains stars of mainly 12 to 16.5 mag in 146fields with galaxies in the declination zone from -5o to+85o. The Tycho-2 has been used as a reference catalogue.The mean epoch of the Pul-3 is 1963.25. The internal positional accuracyof the Pul-3 catalogue at the mean epoch of observations is ±80mas. The accuracy of the proper motions is mostly within ±3mas/yr to ±12 mas/yr. Comparisons of the Pul-3 with Tycho-2 andARIHIP have been done at the mean epoch of the Pul-3. Rotation Velocities of Red and Blue Field Horizontal-Branch Stars
We present measurements of the projected stellar rotation velocities(vsini) of a sample of 45 candidate field horizontal-branch (HB) starsspanning a wide range of effective temperatures, from red HB stars withTeff~=5000K to blue HB stars with Teff of 17,000K.Among the cooler blue HB stars (Teff=7500-11500 K), weconfirm prior studies showing that, although a majority of stars rotateat vsini<15kms-1, there exists a subset of ``fastrotators'' with vsini as high as 30-35 km s-1. All but one ofthe red HB stars in our sample have vsini<10kms-1, and noanalogous rotation bimodality is evident. We also identify anarrow-lined hot star (Teff~=16,000K) with enhancedphotospheric metal abundances and helium depletion, similar to theabundance patterns found among hot BHB stars in globular clusters, andfour other stars that may also belong in this category. We discussdetails of the spectral line fitting procedure that we use to deducevsini and explore how measurements of field HB star rotation may shedlight on the issue of HB star rotation in globular clusters.

Kinematical trends among the field horizontal branch stars
Horizontal branch (HB) stars in the field of the Milky Way can be usedas tracers for the study of early stages of the evolution of our galaxy.Since the age of individual HB stars is not known a priori, we havestudied the kinematics of a sample of field HB stars measured withHipparcos to look for signs of age and population nature. Our samplecomprises 14 HBA, 2 HBB and 5 sdB/O stars. We found that the kinematicsof the HBA stars is very different from that of the sdB/O stars(including those from an earlier study). The HBA stars have low orbitalvelocities, some are even on retrograde orbits. Their orbits have largeeccentricities and in many cases reach large distances above thegalactic plane. In contrast, the sdB/O stars show disk-like orbitalcharacteristics. The few HBB stars (with T_eff> 10,000 K) in oursample seem to have kinematics similar to that of the sdB/O stars. Inorder to see if there is a trend among the HB stars in their kinematics,we investigated also RR Lyrae stars measured with Hipparcos. Here wefound a mixed kinematical behaviour, which was already known fromprevious studies. Some RR Lyrae stars have disk-like orbits (most ofthese being metal rich) but the majority has halo-like orbits, verysimilar to those of our HBA stars. Since the atmospheres of most typesof HB stars do not reflect original metallicities any more thekinematics is the only aspect left to study the origin and populationmembership of these stars. Thus, the clear trend found in kinematics ofstars along the HB, which is also a sequence in stellar mass, shows thatthe different kinds of field HB stars arose from stars having differentorigins in age and, e.g., metallicity or mass loss rate. Radial velocities. Measurements of 2800 B2-F5 stars for HIPPARCOS
Radial velocities have been determined for a sample of 2930 B2-F5 stars,95% observed by the Hipparcos satellite in the north hemisphere and 80%without reliable radial velocity up to now. Observations were obtainedat the Observatoire de Haute Provence with a dispersion of 80Ä,mm(-1) with the aim of studying stellar and galactic dynamics.Radial velocities have been measured by correlation with templates ofthe same spectral class. The mean obtained precision is 3.0 km s(-1)with three observations. A new MK spectral classification is estimatedfor all stars. A catalogue of [Fe/H] determinations: 1996 edition
A fifth Edition of the Catalogue of [Fe/H] determinations is presentedherewith. It contains 5946 determinations for 3247 stars, including 751stars in 84 associations, clusters or galaxies. The literature iscomplete up to December 1995. The 700 bibliographical referencescorrespond to [Fe/H] determinations obtained from high resolutionspectroscopic observations and detailed analyses, most of them carriedout with the help of model-atmospheres. GPM1 - a catalog of absolute proper motions of stars with respect to galaxies
The description of the first version of the General Compiled Catalogueof Absolute Proper Motions (GPM1) for a sample of HIPPARCOS stars,derived with respect to galaxies within the plan called Catalogue ofFaint Stars (KSZ, Deutch 1952), is presented. The principal aim of theGPM1 construction was to provide absolute proper motions of stars todetermine the rotation of the HIPPARCOS system. The GPM1 cataloguecontains 977 HIPPARCOS Input Catalogue stars with V magnitudes $5^m -11^m in 180 fields north of -25 degrees of declination. The accuracy ofthe proper motions is 8 mas/yr (milliarcseconds per year). Comparison ofproper motions of GPM1 with those of the PPM and ACRS was performed andanalyzed with respect to systematic errors caused by spurious rotationof the FK5 system. The standard errors show that the rotation may bedetermined with an accuracy better than 1 mas/yr. UvbyHbeta_ photometry of main sequence A type stars.
We present Stroemgren uvby and Hbeta_ photometry for a set of575 northern main sequence A type stars, most of them belonging to theHipparcos Input Catalogue, with V from 5mag to 10mag and with knownradial velocities. These observations enlarge the catalogue we began tocompile some years ago to more than 1500 stars. Our catalogue includeskinematic and astrophysical data for each star. Our future goal is toperform an accurate analysis of the kinematical behaviour of these starsin the solar neighbourhood.

The structure of the galactic halo outside the solar circle as traced by the blue horizontal branch stars
A complete sample of blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars in the magnituderange 13.0 less than or equal to V less than or equal to 16.5 isisolated in two Galactic fields that have previously been searched forRR Lyrae variables: SA 57 in the Northern Polar Cap and the LickAstrograph field RR 7 in the Anticenter (l = 183 deg, b = +37 deg).These BHB stars are a subset of the AF stars found in the CaseLow-Dispersion Northern Survey; lists of these AF stars were madeavailable by the late Nick Sanduleak. In the color range 0.00 less thanor equal to (B - V)0 less than or equal to +0.20, we candistinguish the BHB stars among these AF stars by comparing them bothwith well known local field horizontal branch (FHB) stars and also theBHB members of the halo globular clusters M3 and M92. The criteria forthis comparison include (1) a (u - B)K color index (derivedfrom photoelectric observations using the Stroemgren u filter and theJohnson B and V filters) that measures the size of the Balmer jump, (2)a spectrophotometric index lambda that measures the steepness of theBalmer jump, and (3) a parameter D0.2 that is the mean widthof the H-delta and H-gamma Balmer lines measured at 20 percent of thecontinuum level. These criteria give consistent results in separatingBHB stars from higher gravity main sequence AF stars in the color range0.00 less than or equal to (B - V)0 less than or equal to+0.20. All three photometric and spectrophotometric criteria weremeasured for 35 stars in the SA 57 field and 37 stars in the RR 7 fieldthat are in the color range (B - V)0 less than or equal to+0.23 and in the magnitude range 13.0 less than or equal to V less thanor equal to 16.5. For a small number of additional stars only (u -B)K was obtained. Among the AF stars that are fainter than B= 13 and bluer than (B - V)0 = +0.23, about half of those inthe SA 57 field and about one third of those in the lower latitude RR 7field are BHB stars. Isoabundance contours were located empirically inplots of the pseudoequivalent width versus (B - V)0 for thelines of Mg II lambda-4481 A, Ca II lambda-3933 A, and Fe I lambda-4272A. Solar abundances were defined by the data from main sequence stars inthe Pleiades and Coma open clusters. Data from the BHB stars in M3 andM92 defined the (Fe/H) = -1.5 and -2.2 isoabundance contours,respectively. Metallicities of all stars were estimated by interpolatingthe measured pseudoequivalent widths in these diagrams at the observed(B - V)0. The distribution of (Fe/H) found for the BHB starsin this way is very similar to that which we found for the RR Lyraestars in the same fields using the Preston Delta-S method. The spacedensities of these BHB stars were analyzed both separately and togetherwith earlier observations of field BHB stars. This analysis supports atwo-component model for the halo of our Galaxy that is similar in manyrespects to that proposed by Hartwick although our discussion refersonly to the region outside the solar circle.

A catalogue of Fe/H determinations - 1991 edition
A revised version of the catalog of Fe/H determinations published by G.Cayrel et al. (1985) is presented. The catalog contains 3252 Fe/Hdeterminations for 1676 stars. The literature is complete up to December1990. The catalog includes only Fe/H determinations obtained from highresolution spectroscopic observations based on detailed spectroscopicanalyses, most of them carried out with model atmospheres. The catalogcontains a good number of Fe/H determinations for stars from open andglobular clusters and for some supergiants in the Magellanic Clouds.

On the identification of field horizontal-branch A stars
Field horizontal-branch A-star candidates are found by spectroscopic andcolorimetric surveys. To confirm their status four-color, H-betaphotometry and ultraviolet spectrophotometry have been employed. In thispaper, the importance of high-dispersion spectroscopy to identifynonclass members by inspection is demonstrated. The final confirmationof class membership requires an elemental abundance analysis.

Catalogue of Hydrogen Line Spectral Profiles of 236 B-Stars A-Stars and F-Stars

MK classification and photometry of stars used for time and latitude observations at Mizusawa and Washington
MK spectral classifications are given for 591 stars which are used fortime and latitude observations at Mizusawa and Washington. Theclassifications in the MK system were made by slit spectrograms ofdispersion 73 A/mm at H-gamma which were taken with the 91 cm reflectorat the Okayama Astrophysical Observatory. Photometric observations in UBV were made with the 1-meter reflector at the Flagstaff Station of U.S.Naval Observatory. The spectrum of HD 139216 was found to show a strongabsorption line of H-beta. The following new Am stars were found:HD9550, 25271, 32784, 57245, 71494, and 219109. The following new Apstars were found: HD6116, 143806, 166894, 185171, and 209260. The threestars, HD80492, 116204, and 211376, were found to show the emission inCaII H and K lines.

Ultraviolet spectra of field horizontal-branch A-type stars. II
The spectra of six additional A-type stars have been obtained at lowresolution between 1200 and 1900 A with the IUE. The energydistributions of four of the stars match that of the field horizontalbranch (FHB) distribution in Huenemoerder et al. (1984) while those ofthe other two do not. Three of the FHB stars fall above a line in theC(19 - V)0 vs. (b-y)0 diagram; however, HD 60825 is anomalously blue forits C(19 - V) color.

Radial velocity measurements. IV - Ground-based accompaniment to the HIPPARCOS observation program
The paper presents 396 radial velocities of stars distributed in 19fields of 4 x 4 degrees. The study employs the Fehrenbach objectiveprism method and the same measuring technique used in a previous paper(Fehrenbach et al., 1987).

Horizontal-branch A stars. II - The temperature scale and a discussion of the surface gravities
Effective temperatures and surface gravities have been derived for fieldand globular-cluster horizontal-branch A stars. The values are obtainedby fitting spectrum scans to the energy distributions calculated byATLAS model atmospheres (Kurucz, 1979, 1981). The validity and accuracyof the results are discussed.

Chemical Composition of the Atmospheres of Halo A-Stars
The atmospheric parameters and chemical composition of 11horizontal-branch stars in the field of the Galaxy are determined. Ahigh homogeneity of the investigated sample relative to its metallicityis found. Comparing the curves of chemical element abundances for halo Astars and for disk A stars a statistically confidential overdeficiencyof the s-process elements and overabundance of the α-processelements are determined for halo A stars. The authors have compared thechemical composition of the investigated stars and that of halo Kgiants.

Infrared observations of metal-deficient stars
Infrared magnitudes in the J, H, K and L bands for 64 metal-deficientstars spanning a wide range in effective temperature, luminosity andmetal content are presented. An accuracy of 0.02 magnitude is obtainedfor the JHK bands and 0.03 for the L filter. Infrared-infrared andoptical-infrared color-color diagrams are discussed and compared withthe mean intrinsic tracks for Population I stars. It is concluded thatinfrared colors are not notably dependent on metallicity, with someexceptions for the reddest giants, which can be also interpreted byresidual effects in the transformation equations between differentsystems. The near infrared photometric system of the Observatorio delTeide, from the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias, is also brieflydiscussed.

The chemical compositions of the horizontal-branch stars of globular clusters in the Galactic field
The chemical compositions of HD 2857, 64488, 93329, 105262, HDE 281679,and BD + 20 deg 5009 are determined. Twelve spectrograms characterizedby a reciprocal dispersion of 9 A/mm which were obtained on a 6-mtelescope are used. The following parameters of seven horizontal branchstars have been found: lg T(e) = 3.90 + or - 0.01, lg g = 2.38 + or0.05, the concentration of Fe/H = -1.55 + or - 0.12, microturbulencevelocity = 2.2 + or - 0.5 km/s, v sin i = 20 + or - 6 km/s, absolutestellar magnitude = 0.08 + or - 0.11, bolometric stellar magnitude =-0.16 + or - 0.10, and lg(R/solar radius) = 0.70 + or - 0.02.

An atlas of the field horizontal branch stars HD 64488, HD 109995, and HD 161817 in the photographic region.
The authors present an atlas of co-added spectra of the fieldhorizontal-branch stars HD 64488, HD 109995, and HD 161817 producedrespectively from 10, 15, and 12 spectrograms at 6.5 Åmm-1 dispersion on baked IIaO emulsion, obtained with the1.22 m telescope of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory. Measurementsof the metal lines made with the interactive program VLINE and the lineidentifications are also given.
